Northern Indiana Smartway Conference a huge success!

Hammond Indiana - South Shore Clean Cities in coordination with US EPA, Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) promoted to participants technology and programs thru the U.S. EPA SmartWay Transportation Program. These included technology available for slashing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and saving fuel through significant improvements to their fleet operations. This event was sponsored by the Horseshoe Casino and NIRPC at the VENUE located in Hammond Indiana.

"EPA's SmartWay partnership helps Indiana fleets go the extra mile by saving fuel and money, while cutting air pollution," said Anthony Maietta Environmental Protection Specialist for EPA's Region V Office. "Within our nation's hard-working transportation sector, SmartWay working with South Shore Clean Cities and their partners have stepped up to help protect our health, climate and environment in Indiana"

A variety of organizations learned about Indiana's available programs and potential funding opportunities available to them in the transportation industry, addressing climate change by investing in clean vehicle technologies, adopting green management strategies that reduce carbon emissions, and promoting the benefits of the SmartWay Transport Partnership.
EPA launched SmartWay in 2004 to help improve the transportation industry's environmental performance. Today more than 2,000 organizations participate, ranging from large multi-national trucking fleets, several rail companies, many well-known retail and commercial shippers, as well as small "mom and pop" organizations.

Through participation, Indiana companies both calculate and adopt strategies for lowering their transportation energy use and CO2 emissions. South Shore Clean Cities working in conjunction with IDEM and Metropolitan Planning Organizations provides technical support, including tools to evaluate options for lowering fuel use and emissions, and help in locating financing for the purchase of environmental and fuel saving technology.

In 2009, the National partnership projects that it will eliminate six million tons of CO2 and conserve more than 540 million gallons of diesel fuel, a savings of at least $1.3 billion a year in fuel costs.

For more information on the Northern Indiana Smartway event please see website www.smartidle.com. South Shore Clean Cities is an affiliate member of EPA's SmartWay Transport® Partnership. This voluntary program is a partnership between transport companies and organizations that aim to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. As an affiliate, SSCC will work with other SmartWay Transport partners to help the industry reduce its carbon impact.

What is the Indiana Clean Diesel Consortium?

The Indiana Clean Diesel Consortium is a collaboration of state and local agencies, along with communities, non-profit organizations and private companies working together to reduce emissions from diesel engines in Indiana.

We estimate there are approximately 600,000 diesel-powered engines in Indiana that we can affect through voluntary action.

The Indiana Clean Diesel Consortium will do this through operational changes, technological improvements and use of cleaner fuels. The Initiative also supports EPA Region 5 state clean diesel coalitions in order to foster clean diesel activities that reduce fuel use and emissions. Together, we target diesel engines across all Indiana fleets

Please call South Shore Clean Cities for additional details.

Using alternative fuels in vehicles can generally reduce harmful pollutants and exhaust emissions. In addition, most of these fuels can be domestically produced and derived from renewable sources.
