The Indiana Clean Diesel Consortium is a collaboration of state and local agencies, along with communities, non-profit organizations and private companies working together to reduce emissions from diesel engines in Indiana. We estimate there are approximately 600,000 diesel-powered engines in Indiana that we can affect through voluntary action. The Indiana Clean Diesel Consortium will do this through operational changes, technological improvements and use of cleaner fuels. The Initiative also supports EPA Region 5 state clean diesel coalitions in order to foster clean diesel activities that reduce fuel use and emissions. Together, we target diesel engines across all Indiana fleets Please call South Shore Clean Cities for additional details.

Ethanol Energy Balance Study The US Department of Agriculture has issued its "2008 Energy Balance for the Corn-Ethanol Industry" report, and the findings are good news. It concludes that ethanol has a net energy gain of up to 130 percent, that corn yields are up (on the same number of acres) nitrogen fertilizer use is down, and many ethanol plants are adopting greener and cleaner methods of generating energy and operating more efficiently. The USDA report is getting good press, like this article in the Star Tribune. Northwest Indiana's Quality of Air Report Is In Click Here to find out what NWI scored! |

Tweaks in Tech event! Thursday, September 30, 2010 Save the Date for: Fleet Technology Seminar Biogas: The Other
Biofuel South Shore Clean Cities Coalition invites you to attend a Biogas Seminar Thursday, September 9. Speakers Tony Lindsay from Gas Technology Institute and Jan Scott from Unison Solutions will discuss examples of projects converting once wasted biogas streams into useful and practical energy sources, including vehicle fuel, through a variety of applications .
Getting gas from sources such as agricultural waste, forestry residues, municipal waste water, or landfills is a highly under utilized resource. Using gas from these sources can help reduce energy dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. Advancements in technologies to utilize biogas and public policies regarding the value of biogas are now making projects economically possible around the country.
The Coalition invites you to stick around after the seminar and participate in The Chicago Area Clean Cities Coalition's 10th annual golf outing. The outing is a great opportunity to network with other SSCC members, local industry leaders and our friendly coalition members to the north and west (Wisconsin & Chicago). The seminar and golf outing will be held at the Maple Meadows Golf Course, 272 S. Addison Road in Wood Dale, IL.
Golf will be played in a scramble format. Prizes will be awarded for the Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, Longest Putt and the team with the best score. From more information please contact SSCC at southscc@comcast.net or call 219-365-4289.

Free Webinar - Biodiesel Policies and Mandates: What’s Really Involved?
September 16, 2010 - 10:00am Biodiesel usage has grown significantly in recent years and many states are considering legislation or programs to promote renewable fuels as a means of reducing U.S. dependence on fossil fuels. As the first state to implement a biodiesel mandate, Minnesota had its share of problems. Many of these have been overcome, yet additional challenges remain, as evidenced by Massachusetts’ recent decision to postpone its mandate in favor of a voluntary program. Renewable fuels, including biodiesel, will play an important role in the pursuit of greener transportation solutions. Biodiesel usage can and will continue to grow, however efforts to promote its use can be complicated. Join us for 90 minutes to hear more about state efforts to encourage biodiesel use, the lessons they’ve learned and ideas for consideration from a European perspective. Register now for this free webinar! CLEAN DIESEL GRANTS AVAILABLE Grants to reduce diesel emissions available in Indiana. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is facilitating new grant opportunities provided through the federal Diesel Emission Reduction Act. Grants ranging from $25,000 to $250,000, subject to availability of funds, will be awarded. Applications are due by 5 p.m. EDT on Sept. 30, 2010, and all projects must be completed by Sept. 30, 2011, to qualify for reimbursement. The effect of diesel emissions on air quality is a universal concern. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to diesel exhaust increases risk for several serious health problems, including respiratory illness and cancer. Over the last five years, South Shore Clean Cities has worked with IDEM in implementing clean diesel projects across Northern Indiana. All of these efforts have dramatically reduced harmful diesel emissions and improved the quality of life for Indiana citizens. “Owners and operators of diesel powered equipment, as well as the general public, benefit from reduced air emissions,” said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. “By taking advantage of funding opportunities, such as the DieselWise Indiana program, diesel equipment owners and operators can voluntarily make wise investments in clean diesel technologies for their fleets.” More information about IDEM’s DieselWise program, as well as the complete grants announcement, can be found at (Web Link). South Shore Clean Cities is assisting members with their applications Additional questions should be directed to (219)-644-3690. THIS
